WU LYF are not your average indie group, the Manchester group are not about being part of the scene or being loudmouths like fellow Mancunian bands before them (I am naming no-one). The appeal of this band is that they are mysterious and prefer to let their music do the talking rather than making too much of the performance and showmanship that goes hand-in-hand with being in a band.
Let's start with the full meaning of their name, World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation, speaks volumes about the marvel and strangeness of this group. It is perhaps not too infathomable that they are shrouded in mystery when they have profoundly poetic ramblings on their website about who they are, and what they represent.
Upon researching them further, I am no closer to figuring out either of those things.
In fact, search the net and you will only find their music, but nothing much else really. It goes to show that they are genuinely seriously about making a name about their music, and not letting anything get in the way. It just makes everybody that little bit more curious to delve into their lives and discover what they are about. Notoriously shy of performing and playing gigs has also made the eagerness of their fans (including me) grow to epic proportions. Luckily then, they will be playing a few gigs in June to loosen the mystery ever so slightly and show everyone that they are worthy of the hype!
For those of you who want me to divulge what I can, well their music is atmospheric, moody and symphonic whilst the singer's voice can only be described as grizzly. Their latest single is LYF and it has all the elements of a heavy-pop tune that will have you captivated and yearning to hear more, and ultimately, know more.
Perhaps I am harking on too much about the mystery of this band, but my intrigue will only grow unless I don't find out. For now I only have my imagination, as they less they say, the more I say. Here is one of their cryptic riddles posted on their website:
WU LYF is nothing, four dumb kids calling out heavy longings for a place to call home, two brothers greet two brothers and play heavy pop. I don't feel at home in this place, like your hearts drunk on kerosene and all you need is a spark. A lil' flare of Lucifer. And in blind faith they believe what they are told to believe and exploit your true mamma until her blood runs blue. The wind on the mountain laps tame, its wild years replaced by an air-conditioning unit, sleek and metallic, molded perfection. And in efficient regulation the people were conditioned and were told there's no alternative son. To tell fire is to question, to bring fuel to the fires started by kids no longer blinded by spectacle glare. So go tell fire.
It can only be a good thing that this band want to make music that we want to listen to, their priorites are right. But in this day and age, our fascination with celebrities and demand for gossip is huge (whether you like to admit it or not). And so the fascination continues with WU LYF.
Their album Go Tell Fire To The Mountain is said to be out on Jun 13th, but who knows with this band!
