Electric Guest are Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton from Los
Angeles who are joined by brothers Todd and Tory Dahlhoff on additional live instrumentation
duties but mainly operate as a duo.
Despite being frequently tagged with the Pop label, there is
so much more to Electric Guest than such comparisons and really it’s hard to
put them into any one genre. The pair have managed to find a mid-range between
chilled out Californian haze while maintaining a toe-tapping funk element at
the same time. The man behind the production desk for the duration of their
debut album, Mondo, might be something to do with achieving this difficult
balance between saccharine pop vibes that still have a viable message for the
more discerning listener.
The legendary Danger Mouse has tread this thin line
himself most prominently in his work as one half of Gnarls Barkley fronted by
vocalist Cee-Lo Green. The tracks
released from Mondo so far such as the dreamy Troubleman and the soulful Awake
have earned the duo a year-long residency in their hometown (a pretty big deal
when you’re hometown is LA) as well as coveted seal of approval from SXSW as
they played the festival this year.
One of the most interesting bands to come from LA for a long
time with great potential for a future full of experimental hook-ridden
delights. Check out "This Head I Hold" out below!
